This is a pledge drive to purchase a second hand Boxford BGL1390 laser cutter from a local person who has offered it at a good price and has kept it in good condition, with light usage. If purchased it'd replace the current 9 year old laser (which would likely be sold).
Add your pledge to the bottom of the page if you have a wiki account (the password is the same as your HMS account) but if you can't access let the trustees know. Your pledge money will be requested once the pledge is fulfilled and once we have the money the laser will be purchased.

Pledge Aims
£3600 - Base pledge for the Boxford Laser Cutter and assorted parts:
* 100W Laser
* Lightburn based controller
* Built in chiller
* Camera with automatic laser focus (the autofocus will be repaired and may not be immediately available)
* Rotary attachment (brand new/unused)
* 1 x Lens with narrower beam for deeper cutting
* 2 x Lenses best for engraving and shallow cuts (caveat; we are not allowing members to swap lenses they may be used in particular workshops however)
* Lightburn Software (3 keys) and Boxford material library
* Misc Spare materials (will be used for workshops)

If we reach £3600 and go over money will go towards the below items:

* Transport and installation
* Spare mirrors and lenses
* Improvements to the laser area
* Running the Hackspace

Pledge Money for Laser Time and Inductions Information
Like the first laser cutter pledge we will be allowing the pledge money to be also used against the cost of using the laser in the future.

It has been decided by the Trustees the cost will not be increasing from £3 per hour which is judged to keep it at a good, affordable level and cover usage, parts and repairs.

To use the new laser cutter you will need a safety and Lightburn software induction. If you have already had an induction on the current laser this will be free and these will be done in groups. The laser team is prepared to commit the time to do this.

Inductions for members not already inducted on the current laser will continue to be paid one to one sessions bookable on HMS (cost £20).

Information and Background on the Boxford Laser Pledge
We were recently offered the opportunity to purchase a laser cutter that is surplus to the requirements of the owner. The machine in question is a Boxford 100W with A0 (1300mm x 900mm) bed.

It was purchased in 2021 and has had relatively little use, mostly during Covid when their primary business was on hold.

The machine has a built in chiller, air assist compressor and advanced control panel with screen. It also has front and back pass-through panels that are easily opened and closed, allowing sheet materials larger than the bed to be processed. To assist in maintenance all parts of the system are accessible by removable panels.

Also included is a rotary attachment which has not yet been used. There is also a camera to assist in positioning work on the bed accurately.

The laser has been well looked after with the honeycomb bed in excellent condition with only a little residue. It has been tested by the laser team doing cuts and engraves.

The user had a small fire in the machine that led to one of the clear lid panels being damaged. This has now been made good but unfortunately it also affected the auto focus system which is currently not working and we will be seeking to fixing this as part of the pledge. Other than this, the machine is in good condition and is recommended to us by Dominic and is recommended by the Laser Team for purchase.

Software is Lightburn which is one of the best laser control programs currently, allowing use of many different file formats including both raster and vector files.

When new this machine cost £8932, but the owner is looking for £3500 for a quick sale and we want to fix the autofocus for an additional £100 for £3600 total.

Our Current Laser
The current laser cutter was discussed in the last Members Meeting, and rightly the question was raised about fixing or improving the current laser cutter.

Our current laser cutter is currently over 9 years old and in recent times (3-4 years) we have seen multiple problems develop which despite servicing by a professional engineer continue to plague us.

Lasercut software on the PC has always been unreliable, sometimes failing to load files, even the regularly used induction files from both hard drive and removable media and failure to download files to the laser for cutting. Multiple attempts usually result in success but there is no pattern to the problem.

Intermittently the laser head will jog around 10mm to either left or right while cutting and continue while maintaining the offset.

While the base bed on the laser is level, both knife and honeycomb beds have problems with the honeycomb bed having a significant dip in the middle, this may be contributing to uneven cutting with parts of projects not cutting through completely.

We have also had instances of the cut becoming random during a session, which can result in a waste of materials.

While some of these issues could be resolved by modifying the laser, we are faced with it being taken offline for indeterminate periods while work is done and tested. This could cause upset amongst users of arguably the most popular tool in the Hackspace, especially as there is no guarantee of the machine being fixed by this work.

The Laser Team recommends this Pledge Drive to raise the funds required to purchase the Boxford as it will quickly solve the current issues, while giving a significant upgrade in laser performance (25% power increase and much wider capabilities with Lightburn).

FAQ
How/when will the new laser be installed?

The seller wants it gone ASAP so it could arrive quickly. If we can arrange installation at the same time this will be announced to all members. The lift is currently out of order so will depend on that being fixed.

The new laser will require a short reinduction as noted before, but these can't occur until the new laser is installed.

What is happening to the old laser?

It will hopefully find a buyer since it is in working order. If you are interested, contact the Trustees!

Pledge List
Add your pledge to the bottom of the page if you have a wiki account (the password is the same as your HMS account) but if you can't access let the trustees know. Your pledge money will be requested once the pledge is fulfilled and once we have the money the laser will be purchased.

We are reviewing the pledge list on Saturday 5th of August.

When paying the code will be LASER2023-XX where XX is your initials.
Attendees
Every year, we go as a big group and set up the Nottingham Hackspace village. We offer something to EMF attendees (EMF2016 we brought BarBot, Snackspace and Fire Pong) in a canvas tent if possible. There is obviously a cost to this.

If you are interested in joining the village for 2022, please fill in the table below. There is the opportunity for shared transport and to help pay the cost for the village (costs tbc).

We are also trying for 2022 a "pay it forward" ticket pledge drive - so there may be an opportunity to come on a free ticket that members of the Hackspace pledge towards - the trustees will organise the raffle if we get a ticket secured. See the

Food is available on the site not necessitating a shared meal/BBQ stuff for this year. Snackspace will be run however for snacks and maybe morning coffee too!

We are also doing a EMF 2022 Village Pledge to help fund the marquee, tables, chairs and core things for EMF.
Talks/Workshops/Event
A bunch of us are giving talks and/or doing workshops, because we like to hear the sound of our own voices.

Also we'll be doing Nottinghack village workshops. Note below if you're doing it for the village or generally. The rota for the village will be arranged with those doing the workshops based on their availability so add that if you can.

Nottinghack Village Volunteers
We'll probably do a rough rota for the Nottinghack Village and snackspace so it is hopefully manned most of the daytime to show off projects and assist with Snackspace.

We'd not leave anyone running a workshop alone if at all possible, and if they are we'd otherwise close the tent.
What to Bring
Here are some ideas of things you might want to bring with you.

{| class="wikitable sortable"
|-
! Item !! Reason
|-
| Decent quality long extension lead||If you want power to your tent from the centralised power. 20M reel would be recommended to be sure.
|-
| 4-way extension lead or similar||Plugs will be limited, bring to ensure you have enough for your devices
|-
| Money||Money can buy food and/or beverages
|-
| Teacup||Having your own teacup you can re-use will help us out
|-
| Medication||Bring your own pain killers/hangover cures, we do not supply this! First aiders will be on site.
|-
| Camping Chairs||Chairs have been ordered for village use, bring your own to guarantee a place to sit and for your own tent.
|-
| Long Ethernet cable||If you want ethernet in your tent
|-
| USB cables|| The EMF badge charges via USB-C you'll probably want some for your own devices
|-
| Torch||It gets dark at night
|-
| Rubber Mallet||To help put up your own tent and others
|-
| Drinks||There is a bar but you might want to bring spirits or other drinks for yourself.
|-
| Snacks||To keep your going between meals
|-
| Toiletries||Stuff to wash with, towels, toothbrush etc.
|-
| Raincoat and Wellies||It will probably rain at some point and it's in a field
|-
| Sun Cream||There might be sun at some point and you'll be outdoors
|-
| Bug Spray||It's near water and some people have tasty blood
|-
| Jumpers, Jacket and Hoodies||It will be cold at night and you'll be outdoors
|-
| Painkillers || E.g. Paracetamol/Ibuprofen. Some people get ill, some get hangovers. These are cheap, small and occasionally necessary.
| I'm Andrew Armstrong and have been a member of the hackspace for around 8 years. You might know I applied earlier in the year and am applying again for this election, having assisted the trustees in a non-voting capacity and learning the ropes while they were understaffed.

I have myself done all manner of projects done from costumes to crafts to laser cutter work to electronics to woodworking. I've seen the space grow from 2011 when HS 2.0 was fairly new and without even the laser cutter, to the huge space it is now.

The unprecedented time with the virus means we are looking at having a very slow return to normal, no one could have predicted this several months ago during our financial worries which I am happy the Hackspace properly came together for and solved. I am glad we are on steady ground for now but wish to help move the space forward once we can fully open again.

I am truly passionate about the space; apart from helping the trustees the last few months, I would have organised our EMF village this year; the effort won't go to waste and I will attend EMF 2022 for sure. I make sure to attend the monthly hackspace members meetings, am a regular on the Slack and Wiki, and try to get to a lot of workshops our members organise and visit the space to work on projects.

Apart from being a long-term member I'd bring to the trustees past experience of being involved in the laser, resources and wiki teams, and can see the pain points leading the space activities. I am have helped at public events Nottinghack has attended several times, including every EMF Camp. I have also run my own events at the space, more on the social side, which I wish to continue when the time is right. Outside of the hackspace I am an active trade union branch committee member and have helped run AGMs and done secretary duty for other volunteer organisations.

If elected as a trustee I hope to gather feedback from members on the clear short and long term goals the space wants to achieve once COVID is in a better situation. I'd focus on large long term changes and what larger spends the space should aim towards, such as Hackspace 3.0, or some major aspirational tools. The trustees are in the unenviable position of deciding how money is directed beyond "keeping the lights on" with nothing but vague goals or drives seems pretty impossible. Let's get something long term planned and see how we can work towards it for everyone's benefit!

I applaud the online hustings idea and I will be there, and if you miss that or just want to chat, feel free to message me on the Nottinghack Slack to ask me about anything to do with the Hackspace or this election!

(PS: The Llama isn't mine, but I thought it'd make a more fun picture! Llama hikes are awesome!)
| I've been a member of Nottingham Hackspace since 2012, and since moving closer to Nottingham in 2016 I've become more and more involved with the Hackspace.
My main recent contribution has been working on Hackspace 2.5 most weeks for several years and I was involved in much of the progress that has taken it from an empty set of rooms filled with junk to its current state.
I've also designed and built housings for several of the recent Hackspace infrastructure projects such as the new style RFID reader boxes for the access control system, the wall mounted tablet cases downstairs, and I built and installed the temporary light switches in what is currently the blue room and CNC rooms downstairs.
I've also been involved in providing 3D printer inductions for several years in addition to inductions on the new resin 3D printer we acquired last year.
I have exhibited my FooBot robot table football project at the most recent Hackspace open day and the Nottingham Green Festival to help promote the Hackspace as a place where interesting projects can get made.
I have a familiarity and experience with a broad cross section of tools in the Hackspace including the tools in electronics, metalworking, the CNC room, woodworking, the laser cutters, and various other tools in the space which I believe puts me in a good position to understand the needs of users of the space.
I regularly create projects in and around the Hackspace which run the gamut from crochet and other craft projects through software and into custom tools for metalworking projects.
Professionally I'm a video games developer working in Nottingham with a degree in computer science so I can also bring my programming and general computing experience to bear should it be required.
|-

|
Louise Dennis
| My name is Louise, I've been a member at Hackspace for 2 years now.

I mostly utilise the laser cutter and the woodworking area. I'm really glad I became a member and in the last year I've tried to be useful to the space. I became an inductor for the laser cutter earlier this year. I was also involved with organising volunteer time on the cutter to create PPE for the COVID-19 drive.

Hackspace is important to me because being a parent has it's challenges and the space has provided an easy access location to be creative and become part of a community of like-minded makers.

I would like to become a Trustee as I think I would be useful in continuing to ensure that the space is safely accessible to all makers. I think the biggest challenge is still sustainability. COVID-19 has caused a slump in growth but being on the membership team, I can see that people are still extremely interested in becoming members. The current Trustees achieved a great deal with bringing awareness to the financial side of things which empowered me to be a more involved member. I hope I will be able to empower others to be more involved in the space too. COVID-19 has been a challenging time for all and I want to find ways for us to thrive in this new normal.
| I’ve been a member for over 5 years, using most areas of the Space. I’ve worked on Cigar Box Guitars, lasercut buildings for kids homework projects, 3d printed Pokemon coins and taught both of my kids to solder and make stuff.

I’ve been on the snackspace team getting supplies from the Cash and Carry and helped out with many of the the Hack the Space and HS 2.0 events. I enjoy helping out and putting back a bit more than I take to create a strong space.

I love the fact the Hackspace exists and is an amazing resource open to so many members. I’d like to encourage more member events at the space and create a community for members who’d like to be involved in one. I’d also like to make the functioning of the space more transparent where possible - the space ought to be run by members, rather than trustees.

While I’m not an expert on anything to do with stairs, part of my paid work is as a team communications facilitator and coach - and I’d hope to bring some of the things from work to the functioning and communication of the space.
| I'm an Architect and have a passion for design and making. My favourite and most used area of the hackspace is the wood working area. I like to make bespoke furniture and to experiment with new ideas.

During the old normal I came to the space on a weekly basis on a Monday evening, usually to work on projects but sometimes just to potter about, carry out a little bit of maintenance on some tools, or clear up a small area whilst conversing with other makers about our projects.

I love the collaboration and skill sharing that the hackspace enables, and the way that this activity is fostered. Before I knew of the hackspace I'd always wanted to try to weld and the hackspace, its members, and the available tools made it possible. I want to encourage more of this and to make the space feel as accessible as possible to all.

I've been a member for over three years and feel like I have a good understanding of what it takes to be a Trustee of the space whilst also being able to bring some fresh ideas to the table.
|-

|
James Spence
| Hi, I'm James W Spence.
I'm a 25 year old engineer based in the Midlands. I'm never too far from the space most evenings, working on projects, being social with members as well as working on improvements to the Hackspace.
I aim to make the space more usable and pleasant.
I mostly work with a small team in the electronics area. We have been working with members to improve the area, including building a new large projects table to increase working space.
We've seen improvement in the use of the electronics space which is very rewarding!

In future, I would like to help with other areas of the space, working with members to
improve the space.
I think we need a new large project/ large material storage solution to ensure projects are safe, progressed, achieved and accessible.
I will improve health and safety and processes of the space using my experience of being an industrial site contractor.
I care deeply, and have experience in the fields of:
• Safety in a workshop environment
• Planning as a part of a team
As a Trustee, I would help improve the hackspace in areas such as:
• COVID 19
• Safety of equipment
• Reporting of damaged equipment
• Locking out procedures
• Control of substances hazardous to health
• Waste management
• Space development - ensuring things can be completed in a timely manner or broken down to manageable realistic goals in which progress can be achieved.
• Process management

If elected I would bring my experience as an Engineer and knowledge of tools and machines to the table to improve equipment and tools diversity available at the space. I would also like to improve the availability of consumables, forecasting of cost, and put more self-supporting measures in place for teams and members alike.
|-

|
Andrew Walters
| I have been a member of the Hackspace since 2016 and have been an active volunteer in the membership team and the woodworking team since soon after I joined.

My view on the hackspace as a trustee Is firstly to get the basics right, finance, legal, the organization, events, safety and the good order of the facilities.

I'm keen we are better at the human aspects of running our organisation, mostly being geeks we tend to focus heavily and occasionally aggressively on “process” and “things” as a result we build barriers when it comes to people, hampering inclusivity and the engagement of volunteers.

I enjoy running tours on open nights, frankly I can't recall showing anyone around who wasn’t impressed and many are blown away by what they see, this is testament to the enterprise of the founders and to anyone who has contributed formally or informally over past 10 years, it's easy to get stuck in the things that have gone wrong and the negative issues we have in common with many other organisations and communities. We should not forget the extent of the facilities that have been built, contributions to local and national events and frankly the sheer joy of making and interacting with other makers that our Nottingham hackspace facilitates every day it is open. By any reasonable measure it has been a success.

For myself I work in the scientific and medical instrument supply industry in a service role, although mostly my tool kit is redundant now as I only usually drive a desk.

I am a lifelong Nottingham resident I live in and grew up in and around the City, although I have traveled and worked regularly around Europe and when I was younger I travelled a little on the backpacker circuit in Asia, South America and Australia.

I am happy to expand on any of this and my views on current projects and the future for the space. So please do not hesitate to contact me if you want to ask any questions.

There is a board between the Nanode (see ) and the vending machine which both powers the nanode from the ~34vdc supply, and allows serial communication with the VMC.

The nanode is connected (using software serial) to an RFID reader mounted under the 'H' logo on the outside of the Vending machine.
There is also a micro-switch attached to the coin-reject mechanism (to allow any RFID card read to be cleared from memory), and a blue LED above the reader to indicate when a card has been read & recognised.

The diagram below shows the connection between devices:

UDP Messages
To keep things simple, the UDP/IP interface to holly is text based; the sequence of messages is shown in the flowchart below:

Message details
{| class="wikitable"
!From!!To!!Details
|-
|VM||Holly||
AUTH:<RFID serial>

Sent when RFID card first read
|-
|Holly||VM||
GRNT:<RFID serial>:<transaction number>

Sent in response to AUTH if the card is known & marked as active in the database.
|-
|Holly||VM||
DENY:<RFID serial>

Sent in reply to AUTH if the card is either not know, or marked as expired/canceled.
|-
|VM||Holly||
VREQ:<RFID serial>:<transaction number>:<amount>

Sent when a selection is keyed in. <amount> is in pence.
|-
|Holly||VM||
VNOK:<RFID serial>:<transaction number>

Sent in response to VREQ if the purchase is permitted (e.g. credit limit won't be exceeded).
|-
|VM||Holly||
VSUC:<RFID serial>:<transaction number>:<position>

Sent after the VMC reports to the nanode that the product has been successfully vended.
|-
|VM||Holly||
VFAL:<RFID serial>:<transaction number>

Sent if the VMC reports that the vend failed. ***UNTESTED***. Not sure if our vending machine can/would ever report a failed vend.

Once you've seen the wonders inside, remember your experience with a badge of weird and wonderful things.

(Kate (talk) - I have around 250 circles cut out of Fortean Times magazines that I'm turning into badges. These'll be on sale for £1, with most of the proceeds going to the Hackspace.)

Maybe also postcards? We can laser engrave weird pictures onto card easily enough.

Hackspace orgonite on sale would also be hilarious.
Fowkchttps://wiki.nottinghack.org.uk/index.php?title=Arduino101&diff=13367Arduino1012017-03-20T17:58:27Z
Fowkc:

# Click on "Projects"
# If you need to, create a new project using the "Add New Project" button and entering the project details
# Click "Print DNH Label" next to your project.
# The label will be printed from the printer on the large project storage shelves.

Remember to keep your label up to date when you work on it.
Keep your label clearly visible on your project.

We’d like to remind everyone that the only official storage space is either your membership storage box, the Large Project Shelves (LPS), or the sheet and wood storage area. If your project is too large for any of these areas, please check on the Google Groups mailing list before leaving it in the hackspace.

Audit process
We went through every project and made sure it was included on the list. Every project also received a beige luggage tag with the user's name on it, as well as a coloured sticker.

Almost all projects placed on the shelving at this time received a GREEN sticker.

The green sticker means that a project has been worked on recently. We have given almost all projects the benefit of the doubt here and "green stickered" them. The only exceptions are projects which were totally abandoned with no information about WHO they belong to or when they were placed on the shelf. These items have received a YELLOW sticker.

Next Hack the Space Day, we will reaudit the shelving. If a project has not been touched or moved (ie, there is no change to the "last worked on" date), it will at this point receive a yellow sticker. Those with yellow stickers will receive a red sticker.

Items that are red stickered for over a month will be removed from the project storage and broken down into parts/rehacked.

Print a "Do Not Hack" Label
Overview
As part of the ongoing improvements to HMS by the Software team, you can now keep track of your Hackspace projects and print Do Not Hack (DNH) labels at the click of a button! The new system means that all the necessary information for a DNH label is now automatically printed out and ready to be stuck on your project, and even has a space to update the last time it was worked on.

When you log into HMS, the new project and DNH system is found by clicking the ‘Projects’ tab at the top. Using the ‘Add New Project’ button lets you create a new project, simply completing a title and short description is all that’s required. Once your project is saved; simply click the ‘Print DNH Label’ option that appears while in the Hackspace to get your label printed automatically! The printer on the Large Project Shelves will create you a custom sticker containing all the necessary information, ready to be applied.
