What is spacenet?
Spacenet is a federated authentication system for secure roaming (wireless) network access across hackerspaces and community events
Nottingham hackspace has a separate Wifi network - spacenet - which you can log on to using your HMS credentials. These credentials can also be used be used to log on to the wifi network at other Hackspaces that have implemented spacenet.
Purpose
Spacenet has a few advantages, which include:
- It's more secure, as it's significantly harder for anyone to sniff/monitor your session
- The same conection/credintails can be used at other hackspaces
Connecting
When connecting to spacenet, your username is <HMS username (in lowercase!)>@nottinghack.org.uk, and your password is your HMS password. Exactly how to connect to spacenet varies a little dependant on OS:
- Windows 8
- iOS - short version: pick 'spacenet' network, and enter username="<HMS username>@nottinghack.org.uk>", password="<HMS password>".
- Linux
Additional OS's are detailed on the spacenet wiki.
