What you will learn

The course is intended to introduce you to the machine tool, its features and basic operation, H&S precautions, best set up for good practice, You will learn how to use basic cutting tools and modes of operation, Measurement and practical skills for accuracy and precision, with a high proportion of the time for practical hands on use. There is the possibility to make or start your own project as time allows.

It is not intended to cover advanced topics for those with experience already, but the instructors may be able to answer questions or assist depending on time and availability, balancing the needs of other students in the group.

Facilities.

The Workshop is operated by South Notts College, is well equipped with machine tools, CNC, Multiple welding bays and plasma CNC facilities, there is a large part of the workshop dedicated for trainee car mechanics. The facilities lie just east of the M1 J 28, off the A38 in a modern industrial unit.

Bring With you.

  • Safety shoes with steel toe caps.
  • Safety glasses, prescription safety glasses or cover goggles to go over your normal prescription glasses, Normal prescription glasses alone are not sufficient.
  • Suitable clothing, preferably overalls or bibs, long trousers, tough well fitting long sleeve shirt for welding.
  • Packed lunch and drinks.

There are vending machines with typical snacks soft and hot drinks. The canteen is not open, but the room is free for us to use for breaks.

  • Tie back or hair net to secure long hair.
  • Wear no loose clothing, hoodies with tassels, baggy sleeves, bangles, neck ties or anything that could get caught up in spinning machinery and pull you in.
  • Consider leaving expensive watches and jewellery that you may have to remove to use the equipment at home.


The trainers will not permit you to start without the correct PPE. Although there are some limited loan items.

Start time

Check the arrangements for the particular event, normally start is at 9:30PM, Please be early or on time. Finish is at 5:00 PM, but practical activities will cease at 4:30 promptly to allow time for cleaning up (including the rest area) There will be breaks for drinks and for lunch.

There are no changing facilities as such but there are toilets if you need to change for travel, the facilities are clean and well maintained, but it is a workshop environment with cutting fluids, oils, sparks if welding and swarf, there is a risk clothing will become dirty as you might expect in an engineering machine shop.

Be aware the trainers and staff are provided by the College not the hackpace, you are representing Nottingham hackspace as well as yourself, we ask you to comply with all directions of the staff and allow others in the group time with the trainers for their own questions. Typically we will be the only group in the facility on a weekend.
