Safety


  • No long sleeves (rolled up and secured is ok)
  • Don't reach across
  • Don't leave chuck key in
  • make sure free moving and clear (spin by hand)
  • covers closed
  • never run in reverse
  • dont touch the swarf (hot and sharp)
  • work can be hot

Tool Description


Its an imperial machine

   Use the Zeus guide for conversion
   Diameter vs radius for cuts

bed, saddle, cross slide, top slid, quick change tool post, chucks, tail stock, tail stock locks, speed belts, back gears, belt tension, power switch, clutch, , auto feed (lever, direction and change gears), micrometer dials, tool storage (rack and below), saddle lock, tread indexer, head lock

pre use maintenance

   5 oil pots
       main spindle on front
       two under belt cover
       two motor bearings

mains power

   switch positions (not reverse) clutch off when starting

adjusting belt speed

   stop motor & tension off, adjusting belts, engaging back gears, tension on, clutch off, motor on

clutch

   always leave it off, right hand operation only (dont reach over work), don't slam it, engage slow and controlled (at all times)
   check chuck and work is free to rotate before engaging
   Use clutch to stop machine not power switch

chucking work, changing the chuck

   never leave the key in
   never extend chuck leverage
   3 chucks available
   3 jaw chuck, Swappable jaws
   4 jaw chuck, reversible jaws
   grip as much as possible
   centering work
   extend not more the 3x diameter for free work (use a center in tailstock if longer)

mounting tools on the post

   quick change tools
   multiple tool holders
   adjust post angle and top slide angle

mounting tools in the tail stock

   lock it down first,
   extend out a little
   push with slight twist
   retract to eject
   used appropriate size drill chuck for bit

power feed

   start away from work
   H32 Oil gears
   engaging for direction
   checking speed and direction clear of work
   using the cam lever
       start away from work
   test cut depth by hand before engaging power feed
   changing gears page 101 book

cutting speeds

   look it up in the book or online
   change base on cutting tool, work material and diameter
   different speeds for drilling

use of lead screws

   hand over hand
   continues smooth cut
   backlash (5 handles)
   setting micrometer dials
   difference in tick marks on dials (cross slide is .1, top slide is .2)

Maintenance


two type of oil pre use oil

   5 flip pots (H32 oil)

complex oiling by metalworking

   Check oil applicators are full

Machining operations (practicle)


don't expect things to be square

1" ali bar

chuck up 3" length

Chucking up stock

   setting center
   tapping (copper hammer)
   dial test indicator

Facing

   oil during cuts
   setup and test clear of work
   correct tool, (two to chose from)
   tail stock clear
   setting tool post angle, top slide angle
   height
   lock off the saddle!
   cutting across face to clean up saw marks
   using cross slide for cut and top slide for depth of pass
   depth of cut (depends on XYZ, lookup table)

Drilling

   oil during
   setup and test clear of work
   get tool post well clear
   center drill (correct size for diameter work)
   drill out to 6mm
   step up in sizes (depends on material and depth, rule of thumb no more than 5mm step)
   pecking operation (NEVER Plunge)

Taper

   oil during
   setup and test clear of work
   change tool
   setting angle using top slide
   lock of saddle
   using top slide to advance tool
   using cross slide to adjust depth of cut

Turning

   oil during
   setting tool angle using top slide and post adjust
   using saddle for cut and cross slide for depth
   dimensioning cuts, calc diameter and cut vs ticks on micrometer dial
   cuts by hand
   final cut by power feed


how it should be left


clutch disengaged belt tension off first motor stopped quick change tools remove empty tail stock drills removed from chucks chuck key returns spanners back in place back gears disengaged power feed gears disengaged clean,

   swarf sweep all down to tray then remove
   Dont wipe down ways with cloth (if you do brush oil with v2)

cutting oils to shelfs report broken bits/tools to metalworking@
