Revision as of 19:24, 5 December 2025

We would like to graph the space's power usage (for YEARS). We have four feeds coming into the space, and three of these are three phase.

Why?

Aside from being cool?

  • Being able to see how much power we are using at idle and peak times may help us reduce our overall energy usage. At 50p/kWh, any reduction in usage can make a big difference.
  • Make sure the building owner isn't overstating our usage.
  • Allow interactive things such as the displays telling us our power usage, increasing awareness of how much we use, hopefully motivating people to turn on only what they need rather than everything.

All data will go to Prometheus for long term logging and visualisation through Grafana. The chosen meters will allow us to see the line voltage, current for each phase, overall current, reactive and active power.

Parts

Bit of a list...

  • 4 of Eastron SDM630MCT-MV - These are three phase power meters, which can also do single phase for the fourth unit, and we can get them for ~£40 each. So, £160 total.
  • 3 of Eaton EMBH306 MCB - The meters need their own three phase power for accurate measurement of reactive and active power. They are also around £40 each. £120 total.
  • 1 of Eaton EMBH106R30C RCBO - For the single phase install. ~£40
  • 4 of RS PRO Steel Wall Box, IP66, 250 mm x 250 mm x 150mm (189-6588) - To prevent it from being a safety hazard. £46.67 each so £186.68
  • 2 of RS PRO Steel Slotted DIN Rail, Top Hat Compatible, 500mm x 35mm x 7.5mm (467-406) - For mounting things. £10.94 total
  • Pack of 10 DIN Rail Mount Fuse Holder Terminal Blocks Screw Type Black UK5 - 2x £17.28
  • RS PRO Beige, 0.2 → 4mm², Screw Termination (Bag of 10 – 815-666) - 3x £8.65
  • RS PRO End Cover for Use with DIN Rail Terminal Blocks (Bag of 5 – 384-7076) - 2x £5.20
  • MEAN WELL HDR Switched Mode DIN Rail Power Supply, 85 → 264 V ac, 120 → 370V dc, 12V dc dc Output, 1.25A (145-7860). 4x £18.38
  • MCU, RS485 and Ethernet bits. Aaron will build and cover

Total for all parts £652.05. We might be able to get some parts cheaper (e.g. off eBay, so the target is lower than this for now).

The Eastron power meters are fairly reputable (BizSpace use the same model!), and have RS485 output, so we can easily interface with them to provide statistics.

Pledge

Some parts we're able to scrounge from AJ
