  • The pre-contents text, "We’d prefer people book on Eventbrite so we can tell you if a particular tour is for any reason cancelled." Let's just say people have to book on eventbrite. If someone turns up and we can give them a tour great, but we should reserve the right to turn people away if they haven't booked. There should also be something a bit clearer here about what this actual wiki page is for, i.e., a repository of guidance for team members giving tours.
  • First two sections are out of date, referring primarily to open nights. Rewrite completely from scratch.
  • §3 https://wiki.nottinghack.org.uk/wiki/Open_Night_Tours#What_is_the_space.3F - minor point here, but worth starting out with asking people what they know/expect to pitch the level of detail right for the crowd. Also, this is something one can address to each person separately at the start along with other "pre-chat". THEN, when everyone is there, give the key points about what it is (Sam's list, not exhaustive):
  1. Workshop with lots of tools
  2. Also a community
  3. Volunteer run by members - NOT a service
  4. Membership granted by making payments, then (almost) 24/365 access
  5. There are no staff, which is why you have to come for an in-person tour to join - you may never meet another person, and the rules are important an NOT like the Ts&Cs for iTunes.
  6. You have responsibilities as member, to contribute and look after the space as well as following the rules, not just a right of access.
  7. Examples of ways to get banned (unsafety, being rude/abusive, sleeping in the space, stealing)
  8. Summary of the membership/joining process:
  1. Sign up today to register with an account in "HMS". You will get a link to register, use it in the next few days or it will expire. Registering does not oblige you to join. Note that you need to give your actual name and address for legal reasons.
  2. Once you have an approved HMS account, you get your payment reference. This is unique to you and allows the payment processing to be automated. Emphasis on automation being important due to lack of staff.
  3. You will then need to set up a standing order of at least £5. A fair amount for a regular user is about £15 based on typical usage versus cost of running the space. Pay more/less based on usage and your ability to pay.
  4. Once payment is processed (usually a couple of days, can be a week), you will get an automated email explaining how to access the space (all access is by RFID card - there are also keypad doors and the codes are shared with members). You can collect the RFID card and set it up yourself.
  1. If you want to stop being a member, just stop paying, remove anything of yours in the space. You will get notifications if you stop and a couple of weeks' grace to restart payments or remove your stored items.

Also, might be good to suggest an itinerary here rather than just "upstairs first maybe" - this is supposed to be a guide right
  • Rest of page - mostly, just update different areas to how they are today rather than how they were 5-10 years ago
  • Add a list of absolutely key things to cover during the tour:
  1. HMS and automation in general
  2. Rules and getting banned
  3. Induction tools and induction cost/process
  4. Tool and snack payment via snackspace
  5. Storing things in the space (LPS and members boxes)
  6. Donating items, and how to for the most part not do it
  7. HTS days, and general volunteer participation
  • Possibly add open hack nights after HTS days to the wiki?
