The MVTC-UK5A is a 5 amp variac which can be found under the benches in the Electronics Area. It can be used to "bring up" appliances slowly, which is less likely to cause old capacitors to explode and allow you to keep an eye on the current as the voltage increases. The variac can be used to increase the input voltage, to a max of 112% of the original (roughly 270V). It is believed to be a donation from the Google Group.
Safety
This device makes it easy to access up to 270V. This is great if you know what you are doing. It is not great if you do not know what you are doing. Do not use this tool if you are unsure about working with mains voltages. Be aware of people nearby and take all necessary precautions.
