The Soap Making kit is two boxes of useful equipment for a group to make soap. It does not include any of the essential protective equipment.

WARNING Protective eye wear must be worn to guard against chemical spashes

WARNING Protective gloves must be worn to guard against corrosive chemicals. Lye is caustic and attacks flesh. See safety information on containers. Wash off splashes with copious amounts of water, and consider medical attention.

WARNING Very hot liquids involved in soap making, including melted fats and oils.

WARNING When making Lye, always add the Sodium Hydroxide (caustic soda) to water, not the other way around. Failure to do this could result in an explosion of superheated solution and steam.

WARNING Adding Sodium Hydroxide to water generates a lot of heat. Work slowly and consider chilling the water in the fridge ice box before starting.

WARNING Do not let Lye / Sodium Hydroxide make contact with aluminium. It will disolve it creating heat and potentially explosive hydrogen gas.

WARNING Work in a well ventilated area.

WARNING Sharp blades on the blenders and soap cutters.

WARNING Some people have allergic reactions to contact with Castor oil.

The Hackspace has lab coats to protect clothing. The protective eye wear in the workshop is intended for flying debris. Its usefulness for chemicals and hot liquids is unknown. Consider wearing a face shield.

Do not store Sodium Hydroxide / Lye in the Hackspace. Clearly label any containers, in case others encounter them. Make sure any solid sodium hydroxide is kept in properly closed containers - if air can get in, it will absorb the moisture and form a solution.

The boxes contain some soap recipe ideas.

The Castor oil in the box is old, and consuming it is not recommended.
