The main workshop is a general purpose messy projects area equipped with workbenches. You will find lots of tools dotted around the workshop that can be used with most materials with the exception of metals. It is primarily looked after by the Infrastructure team but also sees a lot of involvement from the Woodworking team & Craft & Textiles team.
Tools and equipment
Tools available in this area are too numerous to list.
There is a mixture of machine tools and hand tools. Many of the Hand tools are located within the vicinity of the Tray Store.
There is some craft tooling, including screen printing, located around the sink.
A list of tools in this area with wiki pages is available here: Tools and Equipment in Workshop
Important notes
Its very important to tidy away tools and work in this area as it is one of most used areas of the hackspace. Any unlabeled projects that aren't actively being worked are likely to be moved to make way for project work.
If you need to leave something out on the benches please ensure it is properly labeled with a Do Not Hack notice.
Safety
It is advised that Personal Protective Equipment appropriate to the activity is considered when operating machine tools in this area.
For example:
- Safety Glasses when operating the Radial Arm Saw
- Gloves when working with irritants
- Steel toe cap boots when moving heavy projects.
Some PPE is available in the PPE Store; located on the right hand side of the door to the Studio.
Availability
This area does not require booking and can not be booked.
Materials and consumables
- See also: Consumables
There are many materials available for hacking in the Tub Store. Nuts and bolts are available in the Hardware Store racking near the Tub Store too.
Abrasives (Sand-Paper) are in the Tray Store.
There are also electronics parts and power supplies in the Workshop nook. They will be move down to the new Electronics Area in due course.
Cleaning and maintenance
Always leave the area as you would like to find it. Build time into your schedule for cleaning up. Cleaning equipment is located around the Workshop. Dust-pan and brushes are usually found attached the pillars in the centre of the room.
Once a month the tools are checked and maintenance is carried out as required.
Problems and issues
If there is a problem in the Workshop, contact the Infrastructure team in the first instance. If a specific machine tool is broken or damaged report it to the team listed on the relevant wiki page.
If a hand tool is broken, follow the Broken tools procedure.
Sub-Locations
Contained within this area are sub locations. A full list of these can be found here: Sub-Locations of Workshop
